But It's NOT November

Even though it's not November I still would like to recognize something I am so very thankful for. (Because it's OK to be thankful for things & talk about it in months that don't represent thankfulness). They're something that no price can be put on. Although I'm going to try, no amount of words could fully express just how thankful I am for these two things:

Family & Friends

Now, the list of why I am thankful for them could go on for forever, so I'm going to speak specifically in terms of Caroline. Yes, sweet baby Caroline.

She is extremely lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful people. We are such a blessed family to be able to share her growing up with y'all (I would be proper and put 'you all' but when I get proper, my husband makes fun of me.. so we will skip that for now.)

In her two months of life she has already experienced such love and great generosity, she has already been told stories and sang to, she has been rocked to sleep by some of you, and carried around exploring by others. She has been included in conversations and cooed over for hours. Some of you have refused to give her back to her parents and gone about changing and feeding her all by yourselves (I won't complain, I'll sit back watching & smiling at you).

I think it is safe to say that she is a very loved baby. Joseph and I couldn't have hoped for a better support system. We cannot believe how much help y'all (you all) have been to us in terms of setting up for Caroline, volunteering to watch her, wanting to babysit her, giving us advice and showing her as much affection as she deserves.

I'm so happy to have all of you around as our little girl grows up.
In just a few short months she has met a great deal of people (and with my craziness for the camera she has a picture with all of you #sorryimnotsorry). I couldn't possibly post every single person she has taken a picture with, so if you aren't shown & you've met Caroline, please know we love you too.

While I'm spreading my thankfulness around, I would especially like to thank our parents. You have not only been there for Joseph & I since day one, but you have been there for Caroline since day one as well (not figuratively speaking, I'm talking about since Birth, people).

Mom (K & C) & Dad (B & J) you stayed up with her in the hospital and allowed Joseph & I to get that little bit of rest we needed. Mom K, you stayed with us for 2 weeks allowing us to get our balance. Mom C & Dad J, you helped me complete Caroline's beautiful nursery. Dad B & Jimmie, you drove all the way to Georgia to take care of Caroline and made us feel so comfortable knowing our baby girl was in good hands. Mom K, you helped me baby step my way into feeling OK about leaving Caroline for a few hours. Mom C, you stay up with Caroline every time we come to your house allowing Joseph and I to get solid rest.

The list could go on & on..
You all know what you've done, and we could never forget it.

Please know how thankful we are for every little & big thing you all do for us. I think I say this in a lot of my blog posts but we really are so blessed to be surrounded by you great people.

A Week Vacation

This last week of March = Much needed Vacation!

Our little family took a week long vacation from our Central Florida living.

We made a little road trip to a few different places during our vacation and had a blast at all stops!

We packed up and left Monday night for our first stop:

Niceville, FL
We stayed 1 day & 2 nights in good ole Niceville. We spent the afternoon out at Dockside Oyster Bar for a family lunch. Aunt Kayla joined us with her two beautiful babes.
That night we went down to Harborwalk Village to the new Margaritaville and to Crab Island Cantina.

It was a short stay but it was so good to see and spend time with my mom & dad. I could never have enough time with them. And I'm so glad that little Caroline was able to spend a little time with her Nonnie and Opa.

Ace got to spend the remainder of his vacation in Niceville with his Nonnie. He loves Nonnie's house. Lots of good food, back scratches and so much exercise to fill his days.
Next stop?

Brewton, AL

We stayed 1 1/2 days & 1 night in sweet little Brewton. We spent the first afternoon seeing her Grandparent's and her Great Gdaddy, then the boys went off for a day of golf & this momma and the babe got to take a much needed nap!
After a good home cooked meal, I was introduced to the nightlife of Brewton while Baby C spent time with her Sassy.
The next morning was spent shopping and preparing for the next leg of the trip.

The next leg, you say?

Canton, GA

We were Georgia bound for The Best Friend's wedding!
We made a pit stop along the way to see our family in Sharpsburg, GA. We just had to :) They had to meet Caroline and it was the perfect opportunity!
After getting into Canton, let the wedding festivities begin! For us anyway! We went to the Bride & Grooms house (or as my sister-in-law says, the B & the G). We spent the night, catching up with good people, making new memories. There was a fire, Lannomade & a lot of laughs.
Friday was the rehearsal day & Saturday was the wedding. We experienced the painted pig and sidelines and we ate so much good food both nights. The wedding was beautiful and the couple couldn't have been anymore perfect for each other. It was a beautiful occasion.
Caroline stayed with her Opa & Jimmie the whole weekend. They were so sweet to come all the way up to Georgia to watch the little girl while we did wedding festivities. They stayed right down the hall from us at the same hotel so we could come see her whenever we wanted. Which was a lot, including odd hours of the night. #sorryimnotsorry #lovemybaby
Blessed beyond words to have such great people in our life. Caroline had a wonderful weekend, being loved on all around. She was a happy baby.
Sunday after brunch at Brad & Maria's, we set out for out 12 hour road trip home. 12 hours? But it's only 6 from Atlanta to Orlando. Yeah, we know. But, we love our dog. So we drove 6 hours, stopped in Niceville to pick Ace up from his Nonnie's house then continued the 6 hours from there to Orlando.
It was a long day, but hey, Family bonding time.

We had all day Monday to recover from our trip. Joseph had the day off which was wonderful. I don't now if he would have been able to make it through the work day. We were all pretty tired.

Now we're getting back in the swing of things. Slowly, but surely. So....... I'm ready for the next vacation already :)

Caroline's Labor & Delivery Story

I'm going to be semi brief. I believe in honesty but I also believe in too much info. People ask me all the time about what my experience was like- let me tell you all about it.

Keep in mind, this is from the memory of a person on a few meds ;)

The Story of an Induced Labor & Delivery

On January 14th, 37 weeks pregnant, I was sent to the hospital Labor & Delivery unit for a night of observation. My blood pressure had spiked and had been high for roughly 2 weeks. The previous weekend I was put on bed rest with hopes of lowering it. That Monday I was checked in, with the intent of finding out if I had developed toxemia or preeclampsia.

Luckily for us, after checking into the hospital- my blood pressure had significantly lowered and after all the blood work and monitors on my belly, the assumptions of developing toxemia or preeclampsia had disintegrated. We were sent home the next day.

The following Friday we met with my doctor and he informed us that even though it had lowered while in the hospital, we would be delivering no later than 38 weeks. (Despite wanting to keep Caroline in as long as possible for developmental purposes, this was music to my ears.) He had made it clear that based on the tests they ran and by previous ultrasounds that she was ready to come out. She had been practicing her breathing for quite some time and he believed that she was going to be close to an 8 pound baby. She looked good on the screens so he was confident that Caroline would be a healthy baby.

We met with the doctor again on Monday to go over the plans for the next few days and to receive my induction schedule.

We then had to make our phone calls to our parents to let them know what was going on so everyone could figure out when they were going to travel down. I asked my mom to come down in time to be going to the hospital with me- so she got there Tuesday afternoon. Then my dad and Joseph's parents were coming on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, January 21st I had a scheduled induction. I was told to go in at 5:00 PM to get my room. As we're driving to Winter Park, I get a phone call saying there is nothing available for us at that time (we knew it was a possibility but we were hoping that wasn't the case). We were told to be expecting a phone call before Midnight to come back when a room is available. So we turned around and went home.

The hours ticked by, slowly I might add. By 10 PM I had to go to sleep. I was exhausted, but I had my phone on loud right next to me. Joseph stayed awake incase the phone rang- he made it until about 3:00 AM before he passed out. At 5:00 AM on the Wednesday the 22nd we got the phone call to come in for my induction.

Around 11 AM I received my cervidil to start the process. Cervidil has to be in place for a minimum of 12 hours before you can move on to the next phase. So then we were just waiting. About half way through the day, I was put on pain medicine because of how uncomfortable I was. No shame on this end. At 11:00 PM that night, the cervidil was removed and I was then given the Pitocin drip.

After getting as much rest as possible, we were awoken at 7 AM on Thursday the 23rd. The doctor came in to break my water. With this being my first baby, I had no idea what to expect. My doctor was very professional about it, the nurse that assisted...not so much.

Let me explain: The nurses were in the middle of a shift change SO my nurse that I had gotten to know throughout the night was gone, my new nurse had not stopped by yet, so a random nurse that I didn't know came in for a brief minute to assist my doctor. She was rude and made me feel completely uncomfortable. This was the only bad experience I had at this hospital. After my doctor broke my water, he had to go to the office and left me in the hands of the nurse to take care of me. She basically threw a towel at me, told me if she was me that she would have been embarrassed if my water would have broken naturally in public, gave me no instructions on what to do, told me that for the rest of the day I'm going to feel like I'm peeing myself, and then went on her merry way. Ummmm? Really?

Poor Joseph. I was balling my eyes out - feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, and very upset. He called the nurses for me for help but due to shift change, they said they would be there as soon as possible. That didn't help. After 30 minutes and no nurse, I called again and expressed how upset I was and that I needed someone ASAP.

It didn't take long to get someone after that. I then met my new nurse for the day. And poor thing, I probably freaked her out with all my emotions I was feeling at that time. But she was a blessing. I got extremely lucky in the nurse that was sent to my room to help me.

After fixing me up from the traumatic event I had just gone through, she got me set up and in line for my epidural. I waited patiently for it, there was a long line. I remember feeling completely uncomfortable and in pain and praying that the wait for the epidural was almost over.

Finally, it was my turn. The man distributing my epidural came in and we started going over all the info. (I was still focused on the embarrassing pee feeling that I felt from my water being broken, ugh.) He then asked me if I wanted him to go over the risks and then get the epidural or if I wanted him to be prepping and giving the epidural while he goes over it all. No brainer. Let's multitask.

People say that epidurals are painful. I can't contest to it. I don't remember much of it since I was concentrating on the 'water breaking issue' I was having. I do know that I didn't even realize he had already given it to me. So I guess it didn't hurt? I remember how still I had to sit and the awkward leaning forward positing you have to be in to receive it. I also know that immediately afterward, I didn't think about my water breaking experience anymore.

After that, laying back in my bed wasn't so uncomfortable. However, my left leg was completely numb. The nurses said it was normal and that it would go away soon. Well, after hours of not being able to move my leg by myself and dealing with the tingling feeling that was running through it, it finally went away and I could feel it again. It did take quite a few hours though.

All 4 of our parents were there & we even had some family friends that came by to see us and check on Caroline's progress. It was nice having the distraction of conversation to keep my mind off of everything that I was feeling.

One thing that I specifically remember is that after I reached a certain point, no more food or drinks were allowed. I didn't care so much about the food but because of all the medicine that was running through my body, I had extreme cotton mouth and all I wanted was water. Ice chips weren't cutting it. It was awful how thirsty I was.

After getting all my check ups during the day to check my process, I received word that my doctor was on his way to the hospital because we were about ready for delivery.

At 4:00 PM, it was time to get the process rolling. I was told to start pushing at 4:30 PM. I didn't take Lamaze classes so I was worried about this part but my nurse reassured me that it was no big deal and gave me a quick lesson on how we were going to do the pushing and breathing.

In the room I had Joseph & my favorite nurse. My nurse that had been with me all day and made me feel so comfortable and safe was actually almost taken from me to go down to triage. Luckily, we had all built a bond during the day so she made me aware of what I could do to keep her with me for the remainder of my labor & delivery. Thank goodness! This was not a good time to leave me with someone new. So thankful that she wanted to be with me just as much as I wanted her there.

Joseph had a big role in the birthing process. We weren't aware of it before hand but he actually held one of my legs during it. He was so good. I was so proud of him, he talked to me and comforted me the whole time.

After 2 of the 4 set rounds of pushing and my nurse telling me how good I was doing I decided to barter. More good pushing for a few sips of water in between my sets! I specifically remember her saying "as long as you keep pushing like that, you can have whatever you want!" I was so grateful for the water. After 3 more rounds of pushing, my nurse told me to stop so she could call the doctor into the room. She could see Caroline's head.

At 5:00 my doctor entered and suited up for delivery. While he was getting dressed my nurse did another round of pushing with me. Then, my doctor had to immediately rush over for the last round of pushing. He was there for 1 round with the 4 individual pushes and I was exhausted, I gave that round one extra push at the end and she came out! He was very surprised and had to catch her.

After 45 minutes of pushing, our sweet Caroline Ann was born at 5:15 PM on January 23rd weighing 7 pounds and 2 ounces. 5 toes and 5 fingers, we had a healthy baby girl.

I had a severe tear from such a quick labor. I lost a lot of blood and was stitched up for 45 minutes. In that time, I did get to have Caroline on my chest after she was checked out.

After I was stitched up, our family was able to come in and meet their Granddaughter. It was beautiful to watch everyone with her.

The nurse then needed me to get up so she could clean me up after the delivery process. (This part is a little hazy to me but with good reason.) Getting out of bed was difficult, then walking to the bathroom was more difficult and pretty exhausting. I then remember turning around to face the nurse and then I don't remember anything. I had fainted in the bathroom with the nurse. (This part comes from other people in the room.) I fainted and the nurse had to catch me and press the button to call for other nurses. Joseph had to pick me up and put me in a wheel chair and they had to wake me up quickly. Apparently I scared everyone that was in the room. I passed out because of the amount of blood I had lost during delivery.

Because of that little episode I had to stay in the recovery room for an addition 2 hours being pumped with fluids.

After that 2 hours, we were all moved upstairs to the Baby Hotel floor where we would spend the next 2 days.

All the family was in and out throughout the next 2 days. Caroline stayed in the room with us the whole time- minus when she got her first bath which Joseph got to watch.

We ended up having to extend our stay a little longer because of tests that I had to have done. I had to receive a blood transfusion, not a whole one though. I had to get 2 bags of blood to get my color and energy back. I was extremely pale and completely exhausted. But after receiving the blood, I felt much better.

So instead of being released in the morning, we were released later that night. We were then finally able to take our beautiful baby girl home.

That is our story of Caroline's labor & delivery. It was something I will always look back on with joy, even with all of the things we had to go through. We received such a heavenly child out of the process and we couldn't be more blessed to have been surrounded by people who love us during the process.

Caroline Ann @ 2 Months

Caroline Ann is Two Months Old now!
I'm a little behind but life is busy - our sweet Caroline turned 2 months old on March 23rd! It's crazy how time flies. & its crazy how big our little girl has gotten already!
Let me start by saying I am so proud of Joseph & me! We are staying on top of her monthly pictures. We set time aside on the 23rd of each month and do a completely rando (yes, i said rando) photo shoot of her. It's fun. Caroline lets us know when she wants to be done ;)

Fun Facts About Caroline:
  • weighs 9 pounds & 5 ounces
  • 22 1/4 inches long
  • eyes are looking more and more blue every day
  • sleeps 7 hours during the night
  • sits up in her bumbo
  • holds up her head during tummy time & while laying on your chest
  • very observant & alert - will examine new people
  • likes the color red
  • smiles at mommy & daddy
  • loves when people talk to her, she 'talks' back
  • follows Ace with her eyes when he walks by
  • loves naps in her swing
  • likes looking at herself in the mirror in the car
  • has now been to four different states: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi & Georgia
  • LOVES her bottle - you'll get a sad baby when its burping time
  • has almost outgrown her Newborn clothes (almost...)
  • starting to figure out her hands
It's such a joy to watch her learn new things. We might be biased because she is our baby girl but we both think she is advanced for her age. (We were told that with Caroline being born at 38 weeks that her development would be slowed just a tad.) I don't believe it. She's such a smart cookie.
For the record: her smile makes my day. I love waking up in the morning to a happy baby next to me. She's such a sweet girl & an extremely easy baby. We are so blessed. This little girl has made my life, I'm truly more and more in love everyday.
I can't wait to see what developmental milestones she passes next :) #proudmom

March Madness

March is such a filled month.. this year anyway.

Joseph's 28th birthday was the 12th. My Mom's "21st" birthday was the 17th. And now we're gearing up and getting ready to make a week long road trip (which I couldn't be more excited for).

Joseph's birthday fell smack-dab in the middle of the week this year, so with the demanding work schedule he has it was kind of a quiet one this year- Although he did have the day off! What did he request? A day of lounging with his girls :) I won't complain. We did splurge on the calories for two of his favorite eats that day. We 'ate more chicken' for lunch & Tijuana Flats for din. talk about a cheat day. I made him a Budweiser Beer Cake- it turned out pretty sweet if I do say so myself. (Inspiration found via Pinterest). And birthday candles are always a must, so I made a real cake too. Make a wish :)
The following weekend we went out with some fam for a nice steak dinner to celebrate the birthday boy with them. It was a lovely evening: excellent food, excellent people and a divine baby that was awake&quiet the entire time. (She impresses me more and more each day).
I've been trying to stay busy- and Caroline doesn't make that too difficult. We've been doing lots of tummy time and rolling over as well as introducing bumbo time now. Surprisingly, my little bean loves the bumbo .. which this mommy loves. She'll be sitting up on her own in no time! (a special thanks to our good friend Buck for the bumbo! what a great gift!)
Caroline's little personality comes out more and more as the days go by. It's remarkable to watch her discover herself and what she can do. Her facial expressions are some of the highlights of my days. She is such a gem. I can't wait until she learns how to laugh. Right now she makes expressions and motions that show laughter with no sound. She is cooing a little these days too! (Maybe it's just that she is my child, but I think she is advanced). Just saying.
One thing is for sure.. I think she feels the love for us as much as we do for her. She is such a little cuddle bug. She squirms to position herself exactly where she wants to be, which is pressed up against you. Such a sweetheart.
She is such a light in our life. This little girl made us a mommy & a daddy. So much love for this child.

We have a long week of traveling coming up. So Flippin' Excited. Niceville, Brewton, Atlanta, Dothan. Such an adventure ahead of us. All because two people fell in love! So happy to be attending the wedding of two very sweet and dear people to our family- Brad & Maria. We've been looking forward to this for awhile now!

So the rest of this week, I'll be shopping for dresses, packing and getting everything ready for our family vacation- a much needed one at that!

New Recipe Alert!
This week I found a super simple  and extremely delicious recipe! I hadn't cooked in the Crock Pot for awhile so I specifically was looking for a recipe to slow cook all day. If you're feeling like trying something new, give this one a shot! It didn't have a title so I named it:

Mushroom & Soy Pork Chops
ingredients:
6 pork chops (boneless)
1/4 cup brown sugar
5 ounces soy sauce
1 can cream of mushroom soup
directions:
1) Rub brown sugar into both sides of each pork chop
2) Place chops in a shallow dish and pour soy sauce over them
3) Cover and refrigerate dish for 1 hour to marinate
4) Pour cream of mushroom soup into bottom of slow cooker
5) Remove the chops from soy sauce & place on top of the soup in the cooker
6) Cover & cook on low for 6-8 hours until tender

& BOOM! Done. That's seriously it. I don't think it gets much easier than that. I served them over brown rice & made that the main dish! Super easy. Enjoy!

What better way to end a post than with a picture of my four legged pride & joy??? My brown eyed boy, Ace, says hey to the virtual world!

A Taste of Home

We've had a busy weekend - we headed north for the weekend. When I say north, I'm talking about north Florida & south Alabama, nothing crazy y'all.

I was delightfully surprised with Caroline's first trip. She was wonderful! She slept almost the entire car ride. We stopped twice to feed her and change her and those were the only times she woke up. What did we learn? Mommy is free to travel because baby doesn't mind! #yayus
Another wonderful surprise? My prayers were answered and bright and early on our first morning in town, Caroline & I headed to Mississippi to visit & meet Uncle Matt! Words could not explain how thankful I was that everything worked out. I'm so glad they were able to meet and spend a little time together before he flew out for his next orders. #militarylife My heart is smiling about their connection. He was so good with her.
Before this trip Caroline knew very few people, she knew her parents and she knew her grandparents... now our little baby knows 60+ people! Haha, that little girl is so loved. It's so wonderful. She met her Aunts, her Uncle, some of her Great Grandparents, her 2nd cousins, some of her Great Aunts & Great Uncles, even some of her Great Great Aunts. It was so wonderful to see everyone gather for our sweet Caroline.

She was passed around and cooed at and loved on all weekend. I can't even count how many pictures were taken of her of the 4 day span. She got to go to her cousin Karleigh's 2nd birthday party while we were in Niceville and she had a photo shoot while we were in Brewton. We stayed busy :)
She's going to grow up around such wonderful people and she will learn so much from them. We're blessed to know such great people and call them family & friends.

The trips always seem to never be long enough. There is so much to cram into such a short amount of time, so much to catch up on. I think we're all ready to move a little closer so the distant isn't so great. (Next year will be here before we know it!)
I really enjoyed seeing everyone! It was so nice to see some of my friends while I was there. & this mommy even got out for a couple hours one of the nights (I was nervous but Caroline was in good hands- not to say that I didn't check in on her half way through my outing #couldnthelpit)
Currently I'm working on getting back in the swing of things. Starting back our routine at home. It's been a little difficult these last few days, between doctor's appointments and then Caroline & I catching a cold it's probably going to take another day or two. Luckily, the cold hasn't affected her too much, you can hear the congestion but she is still being her playful self and still eating so she's doing ok. We'll kick it soon :)
